DISCOUNTS FOR ENTRY TO PLACES OF CULTURE

Entrance to Italian museums, monuments, galleries, and archaeological sites is free for visitors under the age of eighteen.

Free admission (pursuant to Ministerial Decree No. 507 of December 11, 1997, as amended) is available directly at the ticket offices of the exhibition venues upon presentation of a document certifying one of the following:

  • European Union tourist guides in the exercise of their professional activity, upon presentation of a valid license issued by the competent authority (Circolare 20-2016 DG-MU);
  • European Union tourist interpreters when their services are required alongside the guide, upon presentation of a valid license issued by the competent authority;
  • Ministry staff;
  • I.C.O.M. members (International Council of Museums);
  • Teachers and students enrolled in the faculties of architecture, cultural heritage conservation, and educational sciences, and in degree programs in literature or literary subjects with a focus on archaeology or art history at the faculties of literature and philosophy, or at corresponding faculties and programs established in European Union member states. Free tickets are issued to students upon presentation of a certificate of enrollment for the current academic year;
  • Teachers and students enrolled in fine arts academies or corresponding institutions in the European Union. Tickets are issued to students upon presentation of a certificate of enrollment for the current academic year;
  • School teaching staff, whether tenured or on fixed-term contracts, upon presentation of an appropriate certificate issued by the educational institution, based on the form provided by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM);
  • Disabled persons and a family member or other accompanying person who demonstrates their enrollment in social and health care services;
  • Workers of voluntary associations that carry out, pursuant to existing agreements stipulated with the Ministry pursuant to Article 112, paragraph 8 of the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, activities to promote and disseminate knowledge of cultural heritage;

Upon request:

  • Groups or parties of students from public and private schools in the European Union, accompanied by their teachers, upon reservation and within the quota established by the director of the institute or cultural site;
  • Study or research purposes certified by Italian or foreign schools or universities, academies, research and cultural institutes, as well as by Ministry bodies, or for particular and justified needs, the directors of the institutes or cultural sites may grant free admission to those who request it for specified periods;
  • Study or research purposes certified by Italian or foreign schools or universities, academies, research and cultural institutes, as well as by Ministry bodies, or for specific and justified needs, the General Director of Museums may issue individual annual passes for free admission to all cultural institutions and sites, as well as identify categories of individuals to whom free admission to these sites may be granted for certain periods;

 

Additional free admission:

  • Students of the advanced training courses at the Ministry’s Schools – Central Institute for Restoration, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, and School for Mosaic Restoration – (Circular Letter No. 2288 of April 19, 2001.pdf);
  • Honorary Inspectors and Conservators of the Ministry;
  • Citizens of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, signatories to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), the provisions on free and discounted admission set forth in Ministerial Decree No. 239 of April 20, 2006, Article 1, paragraph 3, amending Ministerial Decree No. 507/1997 (Ministerial Decree No. 11 December 2007.pdf);
  • Members of the Carabinieri Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage;
  • Members of the I.C.C.R.O.M.;
  • Teaching staff and researchers at the European University Institute in Florence (Circular 20/2013)
  • Journalists who have paid their membership fees, upon presentation of a suitable document certifying their professional activity (benefit granted for a period of three years) – (Circular 113_2025 DG-Musei.pdfDDG 01/09/2025 no. 658 DG-Musei.pdf).

 

Discounts:

  • From February 28, 2019, the entrance fee for European Union citizens aged 18 to 25 is € 2.00. The same discounts will be applied to citizens of non-EU countries, subject to reciprocity (Ministerial Decree 9-01-2019 no. 13.pdf);
  • The Ministry has joined the “Youth Culture Card and Merit Card” initiatives, which allow eligible holders to access all state-run cultural sites for which there is a fee, using shopping vouchers that can be generated through an online application (https://cartegiovani.cultura.gov.it/) active from 2024 (2023 Budget Law); Circular 17_2024 DG-Musei.pdf, and 27_2024DG-Musei.pdf);
  • The Ministry has joined the “Teacher Card” initiative regarding access to spaces hosting temporary exhibitions or displays, with a separate itinerary from the regular visitor route. Eligible participants can access these spaces for a fee, using vouchers generated through an online application (http://cartadeldocente.istruzione.it), active since November 30, 2016 (Circular 77-2016 DG-MU.pdf).

 

Free Admission:

Free admission is permitted during special events, both national and local, announced on the Ministry’s website.
