Villacidro

In the territory of Villacidro, a town in the province of Sud Sardegna, there are testimonies of the first human settlements, dating back to the Neolithic and the following Copper Age, in the localities of Seddanus, Cannameda, Seddus and along Villascema and Leni stream, where obsidian artefacts have been found.

The Nuragic era is documented by several testimonies including the village of Cottega and the nuraghi of Narti, Nuraxi, Cuccur’e crabas, Cuccuru Muntoni and Genna Uraxi.

During the period of Roman domination of Sardinia, the territory experienced a significant demographic increase, as attested by the discovery of a necropolis and the remains of two baths. The birth of Villacidro village dates back to this phase: its toponym derives most likely from the Latin “villa citra“, i.e. “villa on the other side of the river”, a name probably connected to a Roman villa built in this area.

Among the most important finds from the Roman era we find the rustic villas of Seddanus, Nuraxi and Bangiu. Recently, twenty-six burials dating back to the 1st century BC were found in Piazza Municipio, the square with the Town Hall.
