The territory of Monastir, village in the lower Campidano area, presents multiple traces of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic; the numerous discoveries relating to the Nuragic, Punic and Roman periods also testify its population in the following millennia.
The hills of Monte Zara and Monte Olladiri preserve important evidence of settlements and burials from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. Not far from each other are the domus de janas necropolis of Is Aruttas and that of Is Ogus de su Monti.
The findings from the Nuragic age are also significant, with nuraghi, huts and sacred areas, as well as a building in which, according to scholars, winemaking was practiced.
