The territory of Fordongianus, a municipality in the province of Oristano, along the Tirso river, is rich in archaeological traces dating back to the Neolithic, such as the domus de janas necropolises of Domigheddas and Gularis.
To the Nuragic age date back some nuraghi, such as Paranu Antoni and Putzola.
Fordongianus is the Roman Forum Traiani, founded under the principality of Trajan to celebrate the pacification of the civitates Barbariae of the interior of Sardinia. Forum Traiani is located near Aquae Ypsitanae, a settlement built between the end of the Republican age or the very early Imperial age along the Tirso river, where there was also a thermal complex.
The waters that flowed along the river at a temperature of over 50° C were conveyed through a system of canalization to the thermal structure, complete with natatio, created in an initial phase of the settlement for the needs of the military garrison stationed there to control and repress the revolts of the civitates Barbariae.
