Carloforte is located on the island of San Pietro, on the opposite side of south-west coast of Sardinia.
The human presence on the island dates back to prehistoric times, as proofed by the presence of jasper artefacts undoubtedly coming from the island, the Becco deposits.
A few nuraghi remain from the Nuragic period at Is Nurachis, Le Tanche, Bricco Polpo and at Piramide.
Between the mid-8th century and the mid-7th century BC the Phoenicians built a stable settlement on the island (documented by a large quantity of ceramics), equipped with a port, near today’s Tower of San Vittorio.
The settlement, where survive traces of cohabitation with the Nuragic people, is known from sources by the name of Inosim, island of the sparrowhawks, perhaps as a reference to a Semitic cult of Egyptian origin.
Later, the island came under Punic control, which left conspicuous traces: living quarters, fortifications, a temple and an underground necropolis, located south-west of the town.
